Lenovo X1 ThinkPad Yoga 6th Gen no longer charges

A customer from Schondorf brought us a Lenovo X1 ThinkPad Yoga 6th Gen (Type 20XY/20Y0) for repair. The notebook was no longer charging, even though the customer had already attempted repairs themselves. Upon closer inspection, irregularities such as missing battery screws, a bent heatsink, and improper soldering work on the motherboard were found. Such complex damage requires detailed diagnostics and professional replacement of the affected components.

The Diagnosis

Our technician, Gilbert G., found that work had already been done on the USB-C port on the motherboard. A protective component (CSD87501L) was completely missing and had been replaced by a bridge with adhesive. This component protects the rest of the electronics from overvoltage. Due to the missing protection, a soldered RAM chip (SN2001024YBGR) was damaged, rendering the motherboard irreparable. Troubleshooting was extensive and took approximately 6 hours, as all power paths and components were carefully checked.

The Solution

Since the defective motherboard was no longer economically viable to repair, the entire board was replaced. The replacement was relatively straightforward:

Only the bottom case, fan, SSD, and some connecting cables had to be removed; the display unit could remain completely in the housing. The motherboard replacement itself took only 30 to 45 minutes (max. 0.75 hours). As part of the repair, the thermal paste was also renewed to ensure optimal heat dissipation.

The Result

After installing the new motherboard, the charging process worked perfectly again – the repair was successfully completed.

Technician's Conclusion

“The case from Schondorf once again shows how risky self-attempted soldering on modern motherboards can be. The removed overvoltage protection ultimately led to the total loss of the board here.”

– Gilbert G., IPC Technical Team –

If a notebook no longer charges, the fault is often not with the battery, but with the charging electronics or protective components on the motherboard. Amateur interventions can cause greater damage in such cases. Therefore, a professional should always perform the repair.
