As a general rule: RAM should ideally always consist of identical modules. Even if two RAM modules look the same on paper (e.g., same capacity and clock speed), there can be internal differences, for example in:

How do I properly pack my AIO PC?

Anyone who wants to send in their All in One PC (AIO PC) for repair or return faces the same challenge as many laptop owners: one wrong move when packing – and the damage is greater than the original defect. Especially with all-in-one systems, where the computer and display are combined in one housing, shock-proof and pressure-resistant packaging is crucial. We currently have a “broken foot” of an AIO PC in notebook technology. We assume that it was packed incorrectly.
In this article, we will show you how to pack your All in One PC safely for transport in order to avoid transport damage and avoid liability exclusions of the shipping service providers.

Why is transport damage so common?

Parcel services such as DHL, DPD, UPS and Hermes stipulate that every parcel must be able to withstand a drop height of up to 1 meter without damage.
That means: Both the packaging and the contents must be protected in such a way that no damage occurs during normal sorting and transport loads. If there is insufficient shock, break or pressure protection, the service providers generally exclude their liability for transport damage. Before any settlement, it is checked whether the packaging meets the requirements. If this is not the case, a replacement is usually not granted.
Especially with all-in-one PCs, the display and display corners, the stand and the rear panel are particularly sensitive. Heavy devices need stronger outer walls – use two nested boxes if necessary (double packaging).
Do not ship two all-in-one PCs in one box – this often leads to total damage and loss of insurance cover.

When your laptop breaks, the first impulse is often: “I’ll send it to the manufacturer.” Sounds logical at first – but practice shows that it is often more expensive than with independent repair shops. Manufacturers mainly work with centralized service centers where only components are replaced. Soldering is no longer done there, and therefore no real repairs are carried out. Especially in the case of mainboard damage, manufacturers charge up to €800 for a mainboard repair.

Packing your notebook safely for transport – here’s how to do it right

It’s a moment that we in our laptop workshop know all too well – the “Oh No Effect” when unpacking. Again and again, there are unpleasant surprises when our IPC service technicians open sent-in notebooks: Improper packaging causes transport damage that often far exceeds the original defect on the device. In most cases, the sensitive corner areas are affected – and thus several housing parts are damaged at the same time. This could be avoided with a few simple measures. In this blog post, we’ll show you how to properly and safely pack your device for shipping.

Why is transport damage so common?

The regulation for the packaging of parcels is clear: Parcel services such as DHL, DPD, UPS and Hermes require that each parcel is packed in such a way that it can withstand a drop height of up to 1 meter without damage. This means that the contents and the packaging must be selected and combined in such a way that no damage can occur under normal sorting and transport loads (e.g. automated conveyor belts, sorting systems, stacking).

If the parcel is not packed with sufficient shock, break or pressure resistance, the shipping service providers generally exclude their liability for transport damage. This means that if damage occurs, the service provider first checks whether the packaging met the stated requirements – if not, compensation is usually not granted.

Loose air cushions or cardboard boxes that are too thin do not offer sufficient protection – they slip easily, and the notebook ends up lying directly against the cardboard wall again. This results in pressure marks, breaks and often total damage.

You shouldn’t blindly rely on insurance either: Standard parcel insurance usually only covers up to €550 – significantly less than the value of a notebook.

IPC Computer therefore insures its own shipments up to €1500 against transport damage in order to optimally protect devices during shipping.

We have documented numerous examples from real submissions in our workshop:

Left and center: Corner breaks and warped housings due to missing padding.

Common to all: The damage was caused by packaging that was too careless!

Preparation - pack the device cleanly and safely

Before you pack your notebook:

Shut down the device completely (no standby).
Remove all cables, memory cards and USB sticks.
Protect the display: A soft microfiber cloth prevents scratches and pressure marks between the keyboard and screen.

The right box and the best padding

The notebook must be padded all around – especially the corners!

Use bubble wrap, foam, or even better, polystyrene molded parts that completely enclose the device.
The notebook must not have any room to move around in the box.
The heavier the device, the more stable the packaging should be – because higher forces act when it falls.
Never pack two notebooks together! This not only leads to damage, but also to the loss of insurance cover.

For individual shipments, the protective layer of the collective packaging is often missing.

Therefore:

The original packaging alone is not enough – it must also be repackaged and padded to compensate for impacts and drops.

Officially approved notebook packaging

The safest are officially tested notebook packaging boxes that meet the requirements of the parcel service providers. They even increase the chances that a possible transport damage will be recognized. Such packaging is universally available up to 17 inch notebook size.

Practical tip:

Styrofoam molded parts from monitors are also very suitable if they completely enclose the notebook.

Accessories and inner packaging

Always pack accessories such as power supplies or cables separately in foil or small boxes.
An inner box for the notebook is ideal, which is additionally placed in a larger, padded box – this provides double protection for the device.

Close and label the box

Securely glue several times with strong parcel tape.
Clearly label: “Caution – sensitive electronics”, “Do not throw”.
Remove old labels completely.

Cleaning a Notebook Fan – Tips and Tricks for Notebook Maintenance

Prevent overheating and thus avoid total damage

This measure is usually free of charge – the laptop owner only has to invest some time. This can be worthwhile, especially if the first signs of a necessary notebook fan cleaning are already appearing!

Is your new laptop already giving out after half a year? The notebook is loud or whistling because the fan is constantly spinning up. It is slow, gets very warm, hot or even simply switches off.

Often the reason for this is a dirty fan / heat exchanger. It is contaminated with dust, dirt, hair, cat hair, crumbs or cigarette ash. If the fan is not cleaned regularly, it can lead to heat damage on the motherboard, the graphics card or the graphics chip (GPU), which can be very expensive (often 400 EURO and more for a motherboard repair). This error manifests itself through unstable operation and crashes during longer runtimes.

Save yourself the costs with a simple fan cleaning. In most cases, it is a simple and quick matter and, with regular use, significantly increases the lifespan of the notebook! Ideally, the fan should be cleaned every 6 months.

The cheapest way is to carry out the cleaning of the fan yourself, but caution is advised, as it can lead to loss of warranty depending on the manufacturer (e.g. if screws are missing).

Measures: What needs to be considered?

First, for safety reasons, the power supply must be unplugged and the battery removed. Depending on the model and manufacturer, access to the fan is easy or complicated. With Acer, Lenovo or Fujitsu notebooks, usually only the service flap on the back of the notebook has to be removed to get to the heat sink. In devices from Toshiba, Medion or HP, the fans / coolers are usually blocked and therefore very difficult to access. It may be that the entire notebook has to be disassembled before you can get to the fan.

We advise to completely remove the fan and not just blow over it. Experience has shown that most of the dust settles between the fins of the heat sink and the fan. A so-called dust carpet is not uncommon after some time. Here you must be careful not to bend or break the thin copper fins! The fins are best cleaned with a brush and air pressure. Keep your fingers away from cotton swabs or vacuum cleaners. A small layer of dust on the rotor blades is not bad, don’t take any risks and rather leave it. If the blades break off, a new fan must be purchased.

What needs to be considered when assembling the laptop?

When reassembling the notebook, make sure whether the coolants need to be renewed. If the thermal paste is hardened, for example, it must be renewed urgently so that the heat transfer is guaranteed.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget to plug the fan cable back onto the motherboard, otherwise it will not be long before the notebook suffers overheating damage.

Now your laptop should run whisper-quiet and quietly again.
