This week, a Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 G1 (21D4/21D5) came into our Notebook-Doktor workshop with a classic symptom: battery faulty. The laptop would only run on the power adapter, and the battery would no longer charge. The customer had already replaced the battery themselves. After the replacement, the device worked for about 14 days, then the same problem occurred again.

It quickly became clear: Battery faulty due to a cheap replacement!

When opening it up, our technician immediately saw: the installed battery was not an original Lenovo battery, but a low-cost replacement. At first glance, such batteries often look fine, but technically there are major differences.

In the lab it became clear: the replacement battery did not provide stable voltage. One battery cell was defective – which explains why it could neither charge nor deliver power reliably. For the system, that means: the battery is no longer detected or stays at 0%.

Additional cause - liquid damage

When removing the battery, signs of corrosion on the contacts were noticeable. These indicated minor liquid damage – presumably moisture entered the device at some point. Moisture can attack the charging electronics or the cell management in the battery, which in the long term leads to a complete battery failure.

So both the original battery and the replacement battery were defective – one likely due to liquid, the other due to low-quality cells.

This week we handled a particularly challenging case in our workshop. A customer sent us two HP Spectre Folio 13-ak0700 devices at once – one defective, the other as a parts donor. The goal was: “Make one out of two”. Good idea – but the execution requires delicate micro-soldering work.

Customer's fault description

“Battery connection and camera connection to the mainboard defective, display frame bent and broken. I have a second device for parts – but without a mainboard.”

As soon as we opened the main device, it became clear that a DIY attempt had preceded this. Both the large battery connector and the small camera connector had been torn off the mainboard during removal. Especially on the HP Spectre Folio, these connectors are extremely delicate, and even minimal leverage or too much force can cause them to detach from the board along with their traces.

Diagnosis and Repair

The good news: Both connectors were not completely destroyed, but merely torn off the mainboard with their solder pads. This made targeted rework under the microscope possible.

Such repairs require very experienced hands, as the connectors are tiny and very sensitive. A very fine soldering tip (under 0.2 mm), high-quality flux, precisely controlled temperature regulation, and above all a lot of finesse are needed. Only this way can additional damage to traces or pads be prevented.

Work steps:

  1. Cleaning and visual inspection of the damaged areas
  2. Reconstruction of missing pads or traces using fine wire bridges
  3. Precise alignment and soldering of the connectors under the microscope
  4. Checking contact resistances and signal connections
  5. Functional testing of battery charging, camera, and overall system

After successful soldering work, we were able to transfer the components from the parts donor device to the repaired mainboard and completely reassemble the notebook.

What were the special features of this case?

  • Two nearly identical devices were sent in
  • Both devices were analyzed and sensibly combined
  • Result: One fully functional notebook from two defective devices

Work on the battery or delicate connectors should only be done by professionals; incorrect handling or improper heating causes irreparable damage. The customer did exactly the right thing by sending both devices. Through the combination of parts and professional micro-soldering work, we were able to restore a fully functional device.

What are typical symptoms of a damaged battery connector?

7 Quick Practical Tips if You Want to Replace the Battery Yourself

  • Disconnect power adapter, then disconnect battery – always in this order.
  • Don’t pull on the cable, only work on the connector and support the port.
  • Gently heat adhesive beforehand, minimize pulling forces.
  • Use plastic levers/spudgers instead of metal tools.
  • Follow ESD protection (grounding/wrist strap).
  • Check service manual/model guide, allow sufficient time.
  • If something is stuck: Stop. Every further attempt increases the risk of tearing off pads.

Conclusion

Yes, in many cases a torn connector can be repaired, as long as the traces or pads are not completely destroyed. With micro-soldering technology under a stereo microscope, the contacts can be precisely reworked and securely soldered again.

If traces have been torn from the board, they can usually be restored using fine wire bridges. However, such work is very demanding and should only be performed by experienced electronics technicians to avoid consequential damage.

No, a battery replacement does not affect your data. For board repairs, we still recommend a current backup. Bring the device turned off and without power adapter if possible.

We advise against it. The housing is very compact, the connections are sensitive, and the risk of damaging connectors or traces is high. Anyone wanting to replace the battery should send the notebook to a professional workshop instead – this also ensures electrical safety.

Shut down immediately, disconnect power adapter, don’t reconnect battery. Don’t try anything else. Secure screws/parts and send for diagnosis – this way you avoid consequential damage.

Fault description & preparations

Fault description:
The customer reported that the MacBook Air M1 no longer charges despite being connected to power. The charge indicator sometimes stayed at 0%, and the device shut off immediately when no power was connected. This points to a defective battery that is no longer being detected by the charging controller.

Initial diagnosis:
After checking, it was confirmed: the power adapter and USB‑C ports were working perfectly. The battery showed no voltage anymore, and “Service Recommended” was displayed in the system, so a replacement was necessary.

Preparation:
For the replacement, you should have a precision tool set ready, as the M1 model uses very small screws. The IPC-Computer tool set for laptop repairs is ideal for this and is available in the IPC-Computer Shop.

Before you start:

  • Shut down the MacBook completely
  • Remove the power adapter
  • Prepare an anti-static workspace

1. Remove the bottom case:
First, loosen the ten Pentalobe screws on the underside. You can then carefully lift off the bottom cover using a plastic pry tool. Underneath is an additional cover over the mainboard—this is also removed to access the battery connector later.

2. Disconnect the battery connector and touchpad cable:
Before removing the battery, be sure to disconnect the battery connector from the logic board. The touchpad flex cable must also be unplugged, as it runs over the battery and could otherwise be damaged.

3. Remove the speakers:
The speakers are located to the left and right of the battery. They must be removed, as some of the battery screws are underneath them. The speakers are also secured with strips (adhesive strips), but can be removed easily by carefully pulling them out.
Good to know: With this model, mounts usually don’t break during this step—so removal is comparatively safe.

4. Remove the battery:
The battery is secured with several Tri‑Wing screws. After removing these screws, it can be lifted evenly out of the case.
On our device, there was also a light adhesive bond here, which could be released with gentle, even pulling.

5. Installing the new battery:
We generally recommend the original Apple battery, as it offers the best quality and an exact fit. The new battery is inserted, screwed in, and then the touchpad cable and the battery connector are reconnected. Next, the speakers and their wiring are reinstalled. (Strips are included free of charge with the original Apple battery)

6. Final steps:
Finally, the mainboard cover is reinstalled and the case is closed. After the first power-on, check whether the battery is correctly detected in the system report and charging starts.

Claim 1: I can leave the laptop plugged in all the time – that won't damage the battery?!


That’s not entirely wrong. However, charging to a maximum of 80% is the clear recommendation.

Modern devices automatically end the charging process at 100%. However, working permanently on the mains keeps the battery at a permanently high voltage level – and this accelerates chemical aging.
Heat development is particularly critical: If you frequently work with mains connection, you should use the notebook on a well-ventilated surface.

👉 Tip: Some manufacturers (e.g. Lenovo, Asus, Dell) offer a “Battery Care” or “Conservation Mode” function in their BIOS or system tools. There you can cap the charging process at 80% to protect the battery.

Claim 2: Laptop batteries can explode for no reason!??


Lithium-ion batteries have a high energy density, but are very safe due to protective circuits. Fires occur almost exclusively with defective or incompatible chargers, cheap replicas or mechanically damaged cells or batteries.

Original batteries meet all approvals and are safe and completely harmless when handled correctly.

Claim 3: Universal chargers fit every notebook?!

This is a dangerous misconception. Differences in voltage, amperage, or polarity can irreparably damage the battery and motherboard. Even slight deviations can lead to overheating or incomplete charging. Different plug diameters and lengths can quickly lead to socket defects and, with a bit of bad luck, damage to the motherboard. Due to the small price difference compared to the original power supply, the savings are not worth the risk.

👉 Recommendation: Only use original power supplies – original power supplies are available in the IPC computer shop for almost all notebook brands. If you want to save money, you have the option of buying identical power supplies from the OEM manufacturer DELTA as from the laptop manufacturer – the only difference – the brand. Claim 4: No-name batteries are just as good as original batteries?!

The advertising promises of the countless replica battery manufacturers give the impression that the batteries are at least as good as the original batteries.

Replica or so-called compatible batteries look the same at first glance, but are usually manufactured by changing factories without access to the original development data. This leads to strongly fluctuating quality.

In contrast, an original battery always comes directly from the notebook manufacturer or its certified suppliers. Names like Simplo, BYD, Celxpert, LG, Sanyo or Dynapack stand for quality that has been proven millions of times over. These batteries are precisely matched to the charging electronics and energy management of the respective laptop model.

Original batteries fit like a tailored suit.

They function reliably, are safe and usually last much longer – often three to five years in practice.

Claim 5: A replacement battery does not need calibration or software adjustment?!

Even modern devices occasionally benefit from battery calibration so that the charge indicator and capacity are displayed correctly.
Some manufacturers (e.g. HP, Lenovo) recommend a BIOS reset or a complete “learning cycle” after replacing the battery.

Claim 6: You should regularly fully discharge the battery?!

That used to be the case, but it no longer applies. With today’s Li-ion batteries, the memory effect is negligible. Optimal range: 20% – 80% charge level.
Devices with an integrated charging controller automatically take care of the ideal maintenance. In the best case, the optimal range should already be preset there. Incidentally, this rule also applies to the current electric vehicles from Tesla and Co.

Claim 7: All original and replica batteries come from China - so it doesn't matter which one you buy?!

This statement sounds convenient – but is simply wrong.

This claim is persistent – and is one of the most dangerous fallacies when buying a battery.
Yes, many cells are actually manufactured in Asia. But: Origin alone says nothing about quality, safety or coordination.

The crucial difference lies in the development, manufacturing control and technical integration.
Already in the design phase of a notebook, the battery electronics, protection circuit and firmware are precisely matched to each other – a finely balanced interaction that only the manufacturer and its partners know.

Replica batteries, on the other hand, are usually created without access to this original data.
They copy the shape and connector, but never the internal controls or safety electronics.
Therefore, replicas are technically always only approximations, not real replicas.
Whether they work reliably remains more or less a matter of luck – because quality and safety vary considerably from batch to batch and manufacturer to manufacturer.

Anyone who now thinks that the price justifies the risk overlooks:
An unstable battery can permanently damage the charging electronics, motherboard and even the notebook housing.
What seems cheap at first quickly becomes very expensive.

Claim 8: A replacement battery with a higher capacity will damage the notebook?!

If voltage, connections and design are identical, a higher capacity (mAh / Wh) is easily possible. It simply provides more runtime.
However, be careful with inferior replicas – quality and protective circuits determine safety.

Claim 9: If the battery is weak, the notebook can no longer be saved?!

On the contrary! In our experience: In over 90% of cases, a battery replacement is enough to restore the mobility of your notebook.
Many devices can still be used reliably for years with a new battery.

Claim 10: Should I only buy the replacement battery directly from the manufacturer?!

False – original batteries are always delivered via authorized partner distributors. Specialist dealers such as IPC-Computer obtain them directly from the manufacturers, with identical part numbers, guarantees and technical specifications. The manufacturers’ processes are often cumbersome, slow and usually more expensive. No manufacturer has decades of experience in the end customer marketing of notebook batteries. Claim 11: Storage in the refrigerator extends the service life?!

Batteries like it cool, but dry. There is a risk of moisture damage in the refrigerator. The optimum is room temperature around 15–20 °C and a charge level of around 50 – 60 %. Due to the change in design of the batteries in Li-Po batteries, which are permanently installed in the device, it is strongly discouraged to store the laptop with the battery in the refrigerator.

Make way! It is clearly visible here that the bloating of the battery has a very detrimental effect on the other components and assemblies of the notebook. Damage is the order of the day.
