Why can different RAM modules cause problems for each other?

A customer wanted to expand their RAM. Their system already had two Micron RAM modules installed. They also installed two newly purchased Hynix modules, so there were a total of four RAM sticks in the system.

The system’s behavior was confusing at first. In the BIOS, all four RAM modules were detected correctly. However, as soon as Windows started, blue screens occurred and using the PC was not possible. Since the modules were visible in the BIOS, there was initially no obvious hardware defect. Still, the behavior pointed to a problem with how the different memory components were working together.

Why can different RAM modules cause problems for each other?

As a general rule: RAM should ideally always consist of identical modules. Even if two RAM modules look the same on paper (e.g., same capacity and clock speed), there can be internal differences, for example in:

  • Memory chips (different manufacturers such as Micron or Hynix)
  • Timings
  • Voltage
  • Sub-timings
  • SPD profiles

When different RAM modules cause instability: causes and solutions

When booting, the motherboard automatically tries to find a common configuration for all modules. In most cases, this works without issues. In rare cases, however, it can happen that:

  • the motherboard can’t find a stable common configuration
  • saved BIOS settings don’t match the new RAM
  • different memory chips don’t work together stably

The result can be instability, crashes, or blue screens.

How can you narrow down the cause?

To find out whether there’s a defect or whether it’s purely a compatibility issue, a systematic test is recommended.

In our support case, we recommended the following steps to the customer:

  1. Test only the new RAM modules.
    First, install and test only the new modules—without the existing memory. This helps check whether the new RAM sticks work in principle.
  2. Test modules individually.
    Each new module should be tested on its own. This makes it possible to determine whether a single RAM stick might be defective.
  3. Test modules together.
    Both new RAM modules should be installed together to check whether they run stably as a pair.
  4. Use the correct slots.
    Many motherboards specify a particular order for the RAM slots.

For many systems, for example:

  • 1 module: slot B2
  • 2 modules: slots B2 + A2

Correct installation is important so dual-channel mode works properly and the system remains stable. (You can find detailed installation instructions for RAM modules in your device manual or directly from the manufacturer).

Other possible solutions

If it turns out that the new RAM modules work without issues individually or as a pair, the cause is usually the combination of different memory manufacturers.

Possible solutions then include:

  • Using four identical RAM modules
  • BIOS update, if available
  • manual adjustment of
    – RAM clock speed
    – voltage
    – timings (more for experienced users)

Conclusion

Combining different RAM modules often works without issues—but it’s not guaranteed. Even if capacity and clock speed match, internal differences between manufacturers can lead to instability.

So if you want to expand your RAM, you should ideally use identical modules from the same manufacturer. This significantly reduces the risk of compatibility issues and ensures stable system operation.

This week we’re showing you a specific example from our workshop – an Asus ROG Strix G15 G513QY where the display remained completely black. At first, everything looked like a classic display failure, but in the end, a defective display cable turned out to be the actual cause.

Fault description: Display remains black

The owner from Baden-Baden brought us the laptop with the description: “Display no longer works.”

Even during the intake process, it was noticed that the device was not optimally packaged – so possible transport damage could not be ruled out. The team documented everything with photos. Since a black display on many laptops indicates a defective panel, the initial suspicion was a display fault.

Initial misconception: new display installed

The technician therefore replaced the entire display as a test – a typical repair step for an apparently “dead” screen. But even with the new panel, the screen remained completely black. It was then clear: the problem must lie deeper – either the new display was also defective, or the laptop display cable had a glitch.

During further testing, it was noticed: when the technician moved the display cable slightly, the image suddenly flickered briefly – sometimes blurred, sometimes with dropouts, sometimes completely gone. Fault description & preparations

Fault description:
The customer reported that the MacBook Air M1 no longer charges despite being connected to power. The charge indicator sometimes stayed at 0%, and the device shut off immediately when no power was connected. This points to a defective battery that is no longer being detected by the charging controller.

Initial diagnosis:
After checking, it was confirmed: the power adapter and USB‑C ports were working perfectly. The battery showed no voltage anymore, and “Service Recommended” was displayed in the system, so a replacement was necessary.

Preparation:
For the replacement, you should have a precision tool set ready, as the M1 model uses very small screws. The IPC-Computer tool set for laptop repairs is ideal for this and is available in the IPC-Computer Shop.

Before you start:

  • Shut down the MacBook completely
  • Remove the power adapter
  • Prepare an anti-static workspace

1. Remove the bottom case:
First, loosen the ten Pentalobe screws on the underside. You can then carefully lift off the bottom cover using a plastic pry tool. Underneath is an additional cover over the mainboard—this is also removed to access the battery connector later.

2. Disconnect the battery connector and touchpad cable:
Before removing the battery, be sure to disconnect the battery connector from the logic board. The touchpad flex cable must also be unplugged, as it runs over the battery and could otherwise be damaged.

3. Remove the speakers:
The speakers are located to the left and right of the battery. They must be removed, as some of the battery screws are underneath them. The speakers are also secured with strips (adhesive strips), but can be removed easily by carefully pulling them out.
Good to know: With this model, mounts usually don’t break during this step—so removal is comparatively safe.

4. Remove the battery:
The battery is secured with several Tri‑Wing screws. After removing these screws, it can be lifted evenly out of the case.
On our device, there was also a light adhesive bond here, which could be released with gentle, even pulling.

5. Installing the new battery:
We generally recommend the original Apple battery, as it offers the best quality and an exact fit. The new battery is inserted, screwed in, and then the touchpad cable and the battery connector are reconnected. Next, the speakers and their wiring are reinstalled. (Strips are included free of charge with the original Apple battery)

6. Final steps:
Finally, the mainboard cover is reinstalled and the case is closed. After the first power-on, check whether the battery is correctly detected in the system report and charging starts.

The Diagnosis

Our technician, Gilbert G., found that work had already been done on the USB-C port on the motherboard. A protective component (CSD87501L) was completely missing and had been replaced by a bridge with adhesive. This component protects the rest of the electronics from overvoltage. Due to the missing protection, a soldered RAM chip (SN2001024YBGR) was damaged, rendering the motherboard irreparable. Troubleshooting was extensive and took approximately 6 hours, as all power paths and components were carefully checked.

Since the defective motherboard was no longer economically viable to repair, the entire board was replaced. The replacement was relatively straightforward:

Only the bottom case, fan, SSD, and some connecting cables had to be removed; the display unit could remain completely in the housing. The motherboard replacement itself took only 30 to 45 minutes (max. 0.75 hours). As part of the repair, the thermal paste was also renewed to ensure optimal heat dissipation.

After installing the new motherboard, the charging process worked perfectly again – the repair was successfully completed.

Today we’d like to highlight a typical but often underestimated issue that can occur with laptops: a loose connection at the power jack. We’re sharing a real-world case by taking a closer look at an Acer Aspire 5 (A517-52G) from our workshop.

A private customer from Aichtal brought in his device because there were two issues: the touchpad mouse buttons no longer worked, and the power jack was worn out but still functioning. These mechanical and electrical contact problems can quickly get worse if they aren’t identified and fixed in time. With a loose power jack connection, there’s a risk of a short circuit that, in the worst case, can permanently destroy the motherboard. In this post, we explain what matters and how we solve this problem efficiently.

  • Repair measure: replacement with an original Acer power jack (5.5 / 1.7 mm)
  • Procedure:
    – Desolder the old jack and solder in the new DC jack
    – Rework the connection points and reinforce them mechanically to ensure long-term stability

After both jobs, we carried out a final function and safety test (charging behavior, voltage spikes, power draw, touchpad response) – everything worked perfectly again.

Billing

For replacing the power jack, the jack replacement flat rate of €159 (including the original jack) was charged. In addition, one labor unit for the touchpad repair was added, bringing the total repair cost to €190 gross.

This made the notebook fully functional again – at a price well below the cost of a potential motherboard replacement.

Conclusion

A loose connection at the power jack is not a minor issue, but a potential hazard. Voltage fluctuations or short circuits can permanently damage the motherboard.
In this case, the customer from Aichtal did exactly the right thing by sending the device in for inspection.
Thanks to the professional repair – replacing the power jack with an original part and restoring the touchpad – the device was fully repaired in a cost-effective way.

Anyone who wants to send in their All in One PC (AIO PC) for repair or return faces the same challenge as many laptop owners: one wrong move when packing – and the damage is greater than the original defect. Especially with all-in-one systems, where the computer and display are combined in one housing, shock-proof and pressure-resistant packaging is crucial. We currently have a “broken foot” of an AIO PC in notebook technology. We assume that it was packed incorrectly.
In this article, we will show you how to pack your All in One PC safely for transport in order to avoid transport damage and avoid liability exclusions of the shipping service providers.

Why is transport damage so common?

Parcel services such as DHL, DPD, UPS and Hermes stipulate that every parcel must be able to withstand a drop height of up to 1 meter without damage.
That means: Both the packaging and the contents must be protected in such a way that no damage occurs during normal sorting and transport loads. If there is insufficient shock, break or pressure protection, the service providers generally exclude their liability for transport damage. Before any settlement, it is checked whether the packaging meets the requirements. If this is not the case, a replacement is usually not granted.
Especially with all-in-one PCs, the display and display corners, the stand and the rear panel are particularly sensitive. Loose air cushions or cardboard boxes that are too thin do not offer sufficient protection because the device can move during transport – pressure marks, housing breaks and screen damage are often the result

Preparation - pack the device cleanly and safely

Before you pack your all-in-one PC:

  • Shut down the device completely and disconnect all cables and peripherals.
  • Secure the display with a soft intermediate layer – e.g. a thin and very soft foam
  • Remove the stand, if possible, and pack the screen and foot separately.
  • Pack the accessories incl. stand in such a way that they cannot damage the display etc.
  • Basic rule – it is better to leave a little more space between the components

The right box and the best padding

The all-in-one PC must be padded all around – especially the corners!

  • Use a stable, double-walled cardboard box that is sufficiently larger than the device.
  • Pad all around – ideally with Styrofoam molded parts or solid foam padding that securely fixes the device and foot.
  • The device should not have any freedom of movement in the box.
  • Heavy devices need stronger outer walls – use two nested boxes if necessary (double packaging).
  • Do not ship two all-in-one PCs in one box – this often leads to total damage and loss of insurance cover.

Why shipping only in the original packaging is not ideal

Many people think that the original boxes are the safest solution – but this is only partially true. These packagings are usually designed for pallet shipping from the manufacturer (e.g. from China to Europe).

For individual shipments, the protective layer of the collective packaging is often missing.

Therefore:

  • The original packaging alone is not enough – it must also be repackaged and padded to compensate for impacts and drops.

The manufacturer’s original boxes are often not suitable for a second transport route, as they are only designed for short shipping distances. It is best to use a new, tested transport box with shock-absorbing padding.

  • Securely glue several times with strong parcel tape.
  • Clearly label: “Caution – sensitive electronics”, “Do not throw”.
  • Remove old labels completely.

Customer's fault description

“About a year ago, we had the charging port of the aforementioned laptop repaired by you. After that, the laptop worked perfectly again. However, since we unfortunately used no original power supply for the laptop, we suspect the port may now be damaged again.

The laptop won’t charge again. At first, we suspected the power supply was also defective and ordered another one. For a short time, about one or two days, the laptop charged again. But now it’s not charging at all, which is why we are unsure what exactly the problem is and whether it’s the port again or the power supply.

We made sure that every specification of the new power supply matched. However, it came from China, which is why we are now unsure and it’s possible that the port was damaged again because of it.

Therefore, we would like to have the laptop checked by you again and, if available, order a suitable power supply at the same time.”

Our technician's diagnosis

The Gigabyte AORUS 17G YD did not turn on with the supplied power supply. The function LED on the power supply remained off, and the laptop showed no reaction after being switched on.

In our workshop, the supplied power supply was first subjected to a standard measurement. A multimeter was used for this:

  • The black test lead was placed on the outside of the power supply plug,
  • the red test lead inside the plug.
    The result: No current flowed.

Thus, it was clear – the power supply was no longer providing voltage.

In the next step, the laptop was connected to a laboratory power supply.

Result:
The laptop started without problems – a clear indication that the problem was a defective power supply.

Why are original power supplies so important?

This example shows how quickly replicas from unknown sources – in this case, a power supply from China – can lead to serious problems. Even if voltage (V) and amperage (A) match on paper, the quality, stability, and safety of such power supplies often differ significantly from the originals. The technical internal components may also be of questionable quality.

Especially powerful devices like the Gigabyte AORUS 17G YD, which is originally equipped with a 230-watt power supply, should always be operated with the original power supply.
